![]() Starting in Downtown Vancouver, or at the other end out in Surrey, BC, the Sky Train is a great transportation system. Automated trains glide along the elevated railway stopping at stations along the way. Trains leave every ten minutes. Trains go inbound and outbound. Elevated stations have good connections to bus routes and one can purchase passes to the entire metropolitan system. Sky Train, buses, sea bus, all available. Less than one hour can whisk one downtown from way out in Surrey and it is a beautiful view from the elevated rail bed. Bicycles are allowed on back car. System was built for Vancouver's worlds fair Expo 86. That fair's theme was, of course, transportation. With the fair long over, the Sky Train continues to serve. This photo is taken just after the train crosses the Fraser River from Surrey to New West Minster. In the background one can see the Pattullo Bridge. Hats off to the Canadians for developing a great mass transit system.
Sky Train cars waiting at an elevated station. Hop onboard, doors close and the train takes off.
Seven Eleven stores, and a few other groups, paid for a bike path to run under the Sky Train right of way making for a "multi modal" transportation artery. This bike path is fairly good through New West Minster, but harder to follow through Burnaby. See my alternative route into Vancouver which makes use of the Sky Train path for only part of its way. |
