south into the Big Sur coastline along Highway 1. Almost looks
like North Cascades, but the white patches are stone, rather than
snow. Looking inland, the sun comes out, but coastal area is often cloudy. Hot air rises over inland areas; like the Salinas Valley just east of Big Sur. This sets up a convection current that sucks cool air in from the Pacific Ocean. Also, right along the coast is a cold ocean current. When moist air crosses that current it turns to fog. There's plenty of moist air, due to a warmer body of ocean water farther off the coast. I still remember lessons from my Geography classes in college. 2006 Trip Next |
