I have been corresponding with someone, who calls himself "Creative Thing."

He came up to Santa Barbara, from Los Angeles area, to visit me.

Rode the Surfliner Train and brought his bike so he could bicycle part way back.

Our earlier connection was in something called "The
Mail Art Network.  Also known as "Postal Art."

I did quite a bit of mail art in the 1980s.  This was before people discovered one another over the Internet.  Back then, mail art, via the Postal Service. was "grassroots communication" at it's best.

Creative Thing

From old postcard of LA marathon mural.

Creative Thing, otherwise known as Leslie, is one of the runners depicted in this "mural along the freeway."

"The Los Angeles Marathon."

I scanned image from an old postcard that Leslie sent.  Image is just a section of the card.  I am not sure if Leslie is in this segment that I scanned.  He's somewhere on that card.

He still runs, but bikes more these days.

Bringing his bike up on the Surfliner, Leslie wanted to ride part way back to his home.  Here is the description he sent after that adventure:

I can certify that the Ventura Amtrak station is 31 miles from State Street (Santa Barbara).

Yeah, I missed the train, but I was fine with that.

There is no ticket booth at Ventura, so I couldn't buy a ticket even if I got there ahead of the train. No matter, I was enjoying the ride. I lost the trail momentarily outside of Carpinteria until a local informed me that the trail goes onto the freeway!

By Venture I was getting depleted and hungry, but I had to get to the Oxnard station before the last train so I kept on a going, still enjoying the scenery and tailwind.

13 miles later I rolled up to the Oxnard station, an hour ahead of the train. I ran over a metal staple in the last mile and was almost flat when I stopped. I had time to get a carne asada burrito, patch my flat tube, call my wife and wash up before boarding. Total distance for the day: 58 miles

Arrived home at 11:30 and in the sack by midnight.

Up at 6:00 am to ride into work.

I had a glorious day. Thanks for being the reason for a one day adventure I would not have otherwise experienced, Robert.

It was a pleasure meeting you.

Then.

Don't know why, but that ride was glorious. Maybe it was the spaghetti, or the coffee. I think it was mostly downhill too.

Robert adds, it's that tailwind wind out of the northwest.
