Lopoc, CA. Highway 1 crests over a pass in the Traverse Ranges. Headed down to the ocean again which is now to the south. There is a big turn in the coastline at Point Conception, which is in Vandenberg Air Force Base. Some see this as the start of Southern California. Dramatic scenery as Highway 1 joins 101 for the trip down to Gaviota State Park. Bicycles are legal on the freeway shoulder here as there is no other road. Shoulders are nice and wide. The tunnel is only on the northbound lanes. I was southbound. See if you can see tunnel at the base of the mountain. 2006 Trip Next |
