If only all roads could be like this.  Bike path through part of Camp Pendleton Marine Base is like having ones own road.

Just before this section of trail, I passed a fence.  The gate that was open, but everal padlocks were  hanging there.  An oddly worded sign read, "do not place your own lock here."  "Un accounted for locks will be removed."

Huh? 

Farther south, fences directed me onto I-5 shoulder.  Base security reasons for not going entire way.  8 lanes of I-5 traffic thunders by, but shoulder is wide and legal in that stretch.  It takes one the last few miles into Oceanside, CA.
